Envisioning the driverless city using backcasting and Q-methodology

Despite the expected future introduction of autonomous vehicles in cities, very few studies have analysed needs and challenges facing urban planning. This paper employs a combination backcasting Q-methodology to carry out participatory visioning for driverless city. novel approach was used elaborate shared visions desirable city among group 20 citizens 10 practitioners. Views on 41 statements were relating design, society, environment, transport mobility needs. Three main identified. The first focuses high-quality spaces active mobility. second vision is more futuristic pro-social, consistent with imaginative innovative stance young people. third conventional closer business-as-usual. results suggest that there some agreement conditions policies, especially need environmentally friendly development safe design. article premised belief engaging stakeholders from different backgrounds, including various ages, can be enriching planning since wide variety heterogeneous preferences across society. requires search common ground when designing policy measures satisfy multiple interests.
